READING, PA – Reading native Samuel B. Lupowitz, an Ithaca, NY-based composer, musician, and bandleader, returns to his formative ground at Genesius Theatre for two benefit performances on Friday, March 8th and Saturday, March 9th at 8pm.

Songs to Make You Wealthier and More Attractive: An Evening of Rock ‘n’ Soul with Samuel B. Lupowitz & The Ego Band will raise money for the theatre that helped cultivate Lupowitz’s talents and launch his career. The 2008 Wilson High School grad acted and played in pit orchestras in numerous Genesius productions from 2005, including The Who’s Tommy and Jesus Christ Superstar. His original rock opera on the Lincoln assassination, The Handsomest Man in America, made its world premier at Genesius in 2009, in a sold-out workshop production praised by noted Lincoln scholar Michael W. Kauffman, who said the show “absolutely blew me away … that was an experience I will never forget.”

“Genesius gave me so many opportunities over the years, so I’m very excited to be able to give back by bringing these top-notch musicians home to perform,” says Lupowitz. “Local institutions that nurture young artists are crucial, and I wouldn’t be doing what I’m doing without the support of places like this theatre. What better way to help it out than through my further endeavors in songwriting, arranging, directing, and performing?”

Lupowitz’s piano and vocals will be accompanied in the benefit by his Ego Band, a group of musicians based out of Ithaca: Will Gelder (guitars), Mandy Goldman (vocals, percussion), Josh Rollin (keyboards, accordion, trumpet, vocals), Drew Serafini (bass, vocals), and Will Sigel (drums). Samuel B. Lupowitz & The Ego Band’s independently-released, self-produced debut record, Songs to Make You Wealthier and More Attractive, was fully fan-funded via a Kickstarter campaign that garnered contributions from music lovers as far away as Singapore. The album was honored by the Ithaca Journal in their list of best local music of 2012. The Ego Band’s dual keyboards, guitar, tight-but-loose vocal blend, and hard-grooving rhythm section recall the organic rock music of the 1960s and 1970s, particularly the influence of performing songwriters like Elton John, Leon Russell, and Bruce Springsteen.

For their weekend residency at Genesius, the group will be augmented by a three-piece horn section, the Id Horns, also Ithaca musicians. In addition to performing Lupowitz’s original songs and choice covers of artists such as The Beatles, The Band, and Joe Cocker, there will be a few showtune surprises over the two nights. “I’m continually inspired by adventurous, emotionally engaging music with lasting impact, whether that’s Stephen Sondheim or Lennon and McCartney.” Lupowitz says. “This benefit presents a unique opportunity to give an audience a varied and surprising show. It’s going to rock.”
