Jan 2013 01

Opening disclaimer: I am a sucker for traditions.  I get really into them.  That is what this post is about.  If you’re on board with that, read on…

During my teenage years, my family started a new tradition to replace lackluster, semi-committal resolutions: rather than specific promises, we would each pick one word to use as a direct, simple catchall for action and feeling throughout the year.

My words in past years have included “courage,” “worthy,” “direct,” and (most recently) “persist.”

The word I chose for 2013 is “risk.”

It has a lot to do with where I am in my musical career.  I’m at a point where, to head further down the path I’ve chosen for myself, I need to get comfortable taking chances.  I have to be willing to fail at booking the gigs; I need to make bigger leaps as far as where and when I can perform or travel.  I need to deal with the possibility of reaching out and being criticized, misunderstood, or rejected.  Without the risk, there will be no progress.

It works for people too, not just my career path.  Being honest even when it might lead to conflict, getting in touch with someone who may not be interested in reconnecting, initiating new relationships, and overall putting myself out there.  The personal and the professional go hand in hand, really.  It’s all about being more open, up front, and self-motivated.

In addition to this, though, I have given myself a few more specific career challenges (because “goals” sounds like somebody is going to yell at you if you don’t accomplish it) for 2013.  Eventually I’ll post a picture of the big posterboard they will live on in my apartment, but my sharpies are all dried out and it’s late and I’m tired and the sun is in my eyes, so for now I’ll just type them up.  Here they are:

-Play at three different colleges
-Find an agent/agency/manager
-License a song for film or TV
-Submit The Handsomest Man in America to at least three new theaters and/or festivals
-Start a new theatrical project
-Get a full-length interview or write-up in a newspaper and/or major blog
-Share the stage with/open for a big(ger) name

So that’s my public declaration, mostly to help ensure I hold myself to it.

Now, what do I do with all this, now that the year has begun?  My biggest priority, bar none, is my other New Year’s tradition: watching Back to the Future.  Heavy, Doc.

Peace, love, and music in 2013.

Cheers,
SBL
