Happy New Year from SBL!
Jan 2017 15

It’s been a few weeks since 2017 began, but my Christmas tree is still up, so I stand by my greeting.

It’s been some time since I’ve sent out a music e-mail. It’s not for lack of activity — in fact, 2016 was one of my busiest yet for performing in my various bands and projects (as well as a number of sit-ins and guest spots), and I also spent a lot of time in the recording studio.

But 2017 promises to have a little more to show for it. The spring will see the release of full-length records by Julia Felice and the Whiskey Crisis (April 1st) and Thru Spectrums (tentatively early May). Both are over a year in the making, and I’m looking forward to sharing the new music with you.

Noon Fifteen, my most recent endeavor with Mandy Goldman and other frequent collaborators, will also be releasing new music this year. You’ll be hearing all about it soon enough.

As many of you know, I’m not so big on resolutions for the year, but my family has developed a tradition of picking one word that we want to use to guide ourselves through the next twelve months. My word for 2016 was “commit,” and I’m proud of my continued commitment to my music and to my personal relationships over the past year.

My word for 2017 is “engage.” Musically, I’m hoping to get my hands deeper into my process, learn more about the parts of my music-making I’m less confident in (particularly recording and other technical aspects), and go deeper in connecting with an audience, both onstage and in the delivery of recorded music.

On a more personal level, I hope to engage more deeply with myself, the people around me, and the world in general. It’s a crazy, scary time that we’re living in, and I’m hoping to spend the year going as deep as possible into art and social issues and friendship… the good as well as the bad.

And that starts with all of you, whose continued support of me as a creative person is meaningful and motivating for me. So thank you all — I’m always happy to hear from you about what I am doing musically, or just to say hello. I’d love to hear your plans for the year to come.

As always, I’ll keep you up to date with my upcoming performances at samuelblupowitz.com — I have a number of dates in both New York and Pennsylvania in the coming months.

So, here comes 2017. Engage!
